This app lets you add Android 11’s double-tap gesture to any phone

If you’ve been following Google’s work on Android 11, you’ll likely be familiar with the back tap gesture the company had included in its early developer previews. The Android 11 double-tap gesture allowed you to tap the back of your Pixel device to do things like launching the phone’s camera app and controlling media playback. Google further built out the gesture in DP2 but removed it with subsequent betas.

The good news is that you can add the gesture to almost any Android device thanks to XDA Developers forum member Kieron Quinn. Quinn developed Tap, Tap, an open-source app that adapts the machine learning model Google built to power the gesture. Tap, Tap allows you to make it so that double-tapping the back of your phone will do things like toggle the flashlight and take a screenshot. It’s also possible to set it so that the gesture simulates the home, back, and recent buttons.

The software is compatible with ARMv8 devices running Android 7.0 Nougat and higher. Provided you own a relatively modern phone, you should be able to check out the app without issue. However, it works best with the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL. That shouldn’t come as a surprise since Google made the gesture specifically for use with its devices.

But don’t let that stop from trying the app out. XDA‘s Mishaal Rahman said he got the software to work on the Asus ROG 3 Phone and Huawei P40 Pro. Other people in XDA’s comment section said they got it working on their OnePlus and Redmi devices, too.
