We’ve been talking a lot about battery technology lately. While lithium-ion alternatives like graphene in smartphones are still a ways away, companies are skirting the mediocre battery life problem by introducing things like super fast charging. Oppo unveiled its new fast charging standard this week. While it can charge a big phone battery in no time, it does put an incredible amount of strain on the battery and causes it to degrade more quickly over time.
This prompted me to ask you last week about your must-have battery feature. When buying a new phone, what battery feature do you look for first? Nearly 1,000 of you voted, and there’s a clear feature you all prefer.
What’s the most important battery feature for you?
Results
This one shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: Nearly 58% of voters in last week’s poll said daily battery life is the most important battery feature in a smartphone. After all, it’s a metric that’ll have the biggest effect on your smartphone usage every day.
Surprisingly, 27.87% of voters said battery longevity over time is their most important feature. I’m assuming these voters aren’t thrilled about all the new fast charging technology, which is known to degrade batteries faster over the course of a couple years.
Just 10.96% of voters said charging speed is the most important thing. Some people don’t care about daily battery life as long as they can top up their phones in just a few minutes.
And in last place is wireless charging, with just 3.48% of the votes. Wireless charging technology still isn’t great (it’s slow and heats up phones quite a lot), and many manufacturers still don’t view it as an essential feature.

Here are some of the best comments from last week’s poll explaining why they voted the way that they did:
- AnySmarterIdRunLinux: Daily battery life compensates for slow charging all the time. Fast charging compensates only when you carry your charger and have an outlet nearby.I never do the first and, sit down, go outside.Long battery life please.
- VJ: Those Chinese OEMs are going crazy with fast charge speeds. I think they are going to degrade your battery so fast that you will regret it 8-10 months down the line.
- Ellio74: Daily battery life (or more) and longevity are both the way to go in my opinion.
I can’t understand why some manufacturers are going for faster charging speeds if it degrades the battery longevity, not to mention that some even use lower battery capacity to allow very fast charging. That’s the worst combo, you charge it more and faster, and both aren’t good for the battery…
I can only name Sony or Asus that seem to take care about their batteries. - Colanet Collins Anyiam: i wish my phone battery can last me a day but i care more on performance of the phone then the battery life because i charge phone on 50% i have charger at work and home
- D9: I’m with you on daily battery life, and on a side note, I pretty much won’t purchase a device (phonethat is) that doesn’t feature wireless charging.
- nikolas ostropolskiy: I think battery endurance is most important. This requires a trifecta blend of good software, a solid processor and a good quality battery. My Oneplus 7 pro has some insane battery endurance compared to my Note 10+ and I feel like perfectly exemplifies my point. It has a smaller battery but a high quality one im sure, and software that is clean and mends well with the processor.
That’s it for this week. As always, thanks for voting, thanks for the comments, and don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the results below.
