The global coronavirus pandemic has been highly beneficial for streaming services like Netflix. As more and more people stay at home to help curb the spread of the virus, Netflix is experiencing a surge in its subscriber base, with almost 16 million new members added in just the first quarter of 2020. The platform is also not hitting the breaks on content anytime soon, with a lot of upcoming Netflix shows and movies being released soon.
According to Netflix, most of its 2020 content slate is largely shot and in post-production stages right now. This means that the pandemic won’t delay any upcoming Netflix shows and movies and there will be no dearth of stuff to watch on the streaming service, at least for the rest of this year.
So without further ado, here’s all the upcoming content you can add to your Netflix watchlist.
Upcoming Netflix shows and movies
Editor’s note: We’ll update this list of upcoming Netflix shows and movies regularly as new ones and their release dates are announced.
1. The Politician: Season 2
This Netflix comedy series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan returns for a second installment on June 19. From high school politics to the New York State Senate, Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) has come a long way. Now enrolled in the New York University, Hobart goes up against a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader Dede Standish (Judith Light). In the end, Payton must decide what kind of politician he wants to become in order to succeed. Meanwhile, his mother Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow) makes a big decision that could upstage him and hamper everything he wants to accomplish.
2. Wasp Network
Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez star in this upcoming Netflix Cuban film. The movie is based on the true story of The Cuban Five — a group of intelligence officers who were arrested in Florida in 1998 and later convicted of espionage and other illegal activities. The movie was originally released in France in January and is scheduled to hit Netflix on June 19.
3. Dark: Season 3
It’s the end of the beginning or rather the beginning of the end. German sci-fi thriller Dark comes around for season three and its final appearance on Netflix this June 27. The new season will mark the culmination of the time-traveling saga to reach a mind-bending conclusion. Upon arrival in a new world, Jonas tries to make sense of what this rendition of Winden means for him, while the others in the parallel world are left on a quest to break the loop. Will we finally know where and how it all began, and most importantly, how it ends?
4. Unsolved Mysteries
Netflix is rebooting the classic 90s series Unsolved Mysteries, together with the help of producers from Stranger Things. This true-crime upcoming Netflix TV series will focus on one real mystery in each episode, fusing signature elements from the original series with contemporary storytelling. The 12 new episodes will tell stories of ordinary people — from those who faced the trauma of a loved one’s unexplained disappearance to those who had bizarre paranormal encounters. The series comes to Netflix July 1 and shouldn’t be one to miss.
5. Ju-On: Origins
Remember “The Grudge movies with the creepy woman ghost? Did you know it was part of Japan’s legendary horror franchise Ju-On? The series from 1998 is now being resurrected as the first-ever Netflix Japan original. The plot of the upcoming TV series will essentially be centered around a cursed house inhabited by evil, angry spirits. Six stories will show what happens to a researcher who searches obsessively for the cursed home. Japanese horror shows and movies are usually pretty spooky and we’re certainly kicked about this one. Ju-On: Origins premiers on Netflix July 3.
6. Stateless
An ABC original Australian drama series, Stateless has already seen a release down under and is now headed to Netflix July 8. The TV show co-produced by Cate Blanchett is highly acclaimed and follows the story of four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert. There’s an airline hostess on the run from a cult, an Afghan refugee and his family fleeing persecution, a young father escaping a dead-end job, and a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal.
7. The Old Guard
Based on a superhero comic book by the same name, The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as Andy, a warrior and leader of a covert group of immortal mercenaries. Through centuries, they fought to protect the mortal world. But when they’re recruited for an emergency mission, they suddenly find the secret of their abilities exposed. They must save their ranks and defeat those who seek to replicate and monetize their powers. The movies will start streaming on Netflix July 10.
8. Away
Away is a Netflix original TV series starring Hilary Swank in the lead role of an astronaut and commander of a mission to Mars. As she goes off to the red planet, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman). As the crew progresses in their mission, the personal dynamics between them intensify and it becomes increasingly difficult to keep relationships steady with people back on Earth. The upcoming Netflix show doesn’t have a release date yet, but we expect it to land sometime in September this year.
Those are our recommendations for the upcoming Netflix original shows and movies you should consider checking out. There will obviously be many more released in the months to come, and we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for everything Netflix announces.
