Today, Google officially launched its first set of true wireless earbuds: the Google Pixel Buds 2. The original Pixel Buds from 2017 had a cable that connected each bud, but these new earbuds have no wires at all. As such, they’ll be going head-to-head with Apple’s incredibly popular AirPods line.
Interestingly, we’ve known officially about the Google Pixel Buds 2 — and even got some hands-on time with them — since October last year. However, Google didn’t let us actually use the new Pixel Buds and wouldn’t give us any solid info on a release date. Now, here we are with the official launch of the product with little warning ahead of time.
Regardless, the Google Pixel Buds 2 promise to be a stellar set of headphones. Using the new Pixel Buds app (which mysteriously appeared on the Play Store and auto-installed on Pixel 4 smartphones earlier today), you can control various new features of the ‘phones, including adaptive sound, in-ear detection, touch-less Google Assistant access, and the usual stuff such as checking battery levels.
Google has told us that the headphones sound incredible, but we haven’t been able to listen to them for ourselves so we’re unable to back that up. The company also promised 24-hour battery life with a fully-charged Google Pixel Buds 2 case, but we can’t verify that yet, either. However, we do know that the original Pixel Buds had battery life that lined up with Google’s claims but didn’t have the best sound quality. The original Buds had a very different design though, so these might sound a lot better.
Stay tuned for our full review of the Google Pixel Buds 2 to find out the answers to these questions. If you already know you want them, though, feel free to click one of the buttons below to grab a pair (which are only available in Clearly White for now)!
