This week in Apple: iPhone 12 size comparisons, box details, and more leaks!

iPhone 12 Size Comparisons

This week in Apple news we got a good look at the size difference between some of the models in the upcoming iPhone 12 series. We also got a look at how some of those models compare to existing iPhones. The overall conclusion is that Apple is going small, which is either good news or bad news, depending on your preference.

In other Apple news, we found more evidence suggesting Apple is killing off the included charger and headphones with iPhones, Tim Cook’s planned testimony in front of US lawmakers, some downgraded trade-in values for iPhones, and more!

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • iPhone 12 dummy models show off sizes: The launch of the iPhone 12 series is still a few months away, but there have been enough leaks now that we have a solid idea of what the phones will look like. However, MacRumors took things one step further and made a video showing off dummy models of the phones to give you a better idea of just how big — or really, how small — we expect the phones to be. Check out the full video here.
  • Box inserts for iPhone 12 series back up removal rumors: Rumors are running rampant that Apple plans to remove charger bricks as well as headphones from the iPhone 12 series’ boxes. That rumor just earned even more credibility with the leaking of a supposed box insert for the phone line, which clearly doesn’t have any room for headphones or a charger.
  • iPhone 12 Pro could stick with 6GB of RAM: As Android phones get more and more RAM, with even 12GB starting to be the norm for flagships, Apple is allegedly sticking with its usual methods of keeping iPhone RAM low. According to a leaker, the iPhone 12 Pro will have 6GB of RAM, just like the iPhone 11 Pro from last year. That was the first year any iPhone got more than 4GB of RAM. The non-Pro iPhones this year are expected to stick with 4GB of RAM.
  • Public betas begin for iOS 14, iPad OS 14, etc.: If you own an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or other Apple product, chances are good you can try out the first beta versions of the new software updates for these devices. This week, most of them went into the public beta stage.
  • iPhone prices could go up, according to this analyst: Although we have evidence to suggest Apple will keep pricing the same as last year for its iPhone 12 lineup, one analyst says that Apple could increase pricing instead. The analyst claims the lowest-tier iPhone 12 could start at $749, which would be $50 more than the lowest-tier phone from last year.
  • Apple slashes trade-in values: With the iPhone 12 series looming, Apple has pre-emptively cut the values of various iPhones when it comes to trading them in for credit at Apple’s stores. The biggest cut was for the iPhone XS and XS Max, which both are now less valuable by $50. See the latest values here.
  • Lots of iOS apps failed to work today: Earlier this morning, iOS users faced problems when major apps stopped functioning. This includes services such as Spotify, Tinder, and more. The problem was due to a Facebook bug, but has been fixed.
  • Tim Cook will testify along with other tech giants: Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, will testify in front of US lawmakers on July 27 over allegations that the tech industry is rife with monopolies and a structured lack of competition. Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook will also testify.
  • Tom Hanks isn’t happy that his film is on Apple TV Plus: With the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down most movie theaters around the world and theater-goers still reluctant to start visiting again, many film premieres have been put on hold. Tom Hanks’ World War II drama Greyhound was one of those films, but it found a new home at Apple TV Plus, where it premiered today. Tom Hanks didn’t mince words about the change: “[The Apple TV Plus premiere is] an absolute heartbreak. I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.â€ Hanks has many scathing quips on Apple in the full interview, which you can read here.
