The perfect family movie night opportunity: Trolls World Tour has arrived

The original Trolls is… well, it’s just weird. The storyline is more than a little messed up. Basically it’s about cannabilism and then identifying with your captors. Or at least that’s the way I understood it. The good news is it’s colorful, fun, and the music is catchy. This is a movie my kids have forced me to watch many times, but the good news is it’s a great family film and I’d much rather watch something quirky than being stuck watching Frozen 2 again (it is an okay film and all, but a man has his limits and mine is four times in a week). And now Trolls World Tour is here!

The follow up to 2016’s Trolls follows Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) as they discover they are far from the only troll tribe. There are six different tribes, all with their own types of music. One of these tribes wants to destroy all other kinds of music, and so now it’s up to Poppy and Co to save the day. The movie sounds nearly as wacky as the first and my family is excited to watch it tonight.

Check it out: all the movies streaming early due to COVID-19

Trolls World Tour is a bit of a unique experiment as it’s one of the first movies in this COVID-19 dominated world that is skipping theaters entirely and releasing for rental. We’ve seen a few other movies leave theaters early and become available for purchase or rent, but Trolls World Tour is taking a unique approach. It’s charging $20 just to rent it for 48 hours.

At first take, I’d say this is overpriced. But then I remember that movie night for a family like mine (there’s five of us) can easily exceed $50 or more. And then I usually have to run out of the theaters at least once or twice (or fifty times) to chase my three-year-old. Now I get to enjoy the movie at the time it would have been in theaters, and yet I don’t have to chase after my three-year-old. Win win.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How long is Trolls World Tour?
A: 1 hour and 34 minutes, which is perfect for younger kids with short attention spans.

Q: Can I buy Trolls World Tour?
A: Not yet! Basically think of this as a virtual movie theater experience. It’ll only be available to rent for a period of time before it likely ends up costing closer to $5 or less to rent, and at that point likely $20 to buy.

Q: Is Trolls World Tour coming to Netflix?
A: Very likely. The first Trolls movie came to Netflix on June 7th, after heading to theaters on November 4th. If they follow a similar timetable, we could see it around December of 2020.
