The best Xfinity Mobile plans (July 2020)

Xfinity Mobile Plans

If you’re in one of the 41 states in which it operates, you may be an Xfinity Internet customer. This gives you the opportunity to sign up for Xfinity Mobile, which offers some flexible plans to match you and your family’s data needs.

Xfinity Mobile utilizes the Verizon Wireless network and even offers 5G access in certain parts of the US. There are also millions of secure Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots across the country which you can be connected to and save your data allowance. There are no activation or phone line access fees, and data starts at $15 per month. You can bring your own device or buy a phone from Xfinity.

There are only really two types of phone plans available, but you can mix and match them or pay for different levels of data. We’ve summarized them below.

Best Xfinity Mobile plans

  1. By the Gig
  2. Unlimited
  3. Combine the two
  4. Tablet and smartwatch plans

Editors note: We will update this post with any changes to the Xfinity Mobile plans.

1. By the Gig

Xfinity Mobile By the Gig 1

This is the limited data version of Xfinity Mobile, and there are three options to choose from. They all come with unlimited talk and text, so it’s all about the data allowance.

While the prices aren’t as good value for money as some carriers, there’s a nice twist to the Xfinity Mobile plans: you can share the data across multiple lines at no extra cost, up to a maximum of five lines.

The cheapest option is the 1GB plan, which is just $15 per month. This is a fairly paltry allowance, so it’s only really suitable if you rarely use your mobile data and just want a low-cost mobile line. You can always pay an extra $15 per extra GB of data if you need it.

You can step it up to 3GB or 10GB per month for $30 and $60 respectively. Again, there are MVNOs that offer better value for money in terms of data, but remember that this data can be shared across several lines at no extra cost. If your family uses Xfinity internet and you want to save money on everyone getting a phone line with text, talk, and data, then one of these plans is a good bet. For example, if there are four of you in the household and no one has particularly high data demands, then sharing a 10GB plan works out to just $15 each.

On any of the By the Gig plans, you get HD quality video streaming and higher-quality cellular service in times with high network traffic, like in a crowded stadium. This is higher quality compared to the Unlimited plan, as all Xfinity Mobile traffic can be slowed in times of network congestion.

2. Unlimited

Xfinity Mobile Unlimited Plan

The Unlimited plan is where Xfinity Mobile starts to really compete with other MNVOs in terms of price.

Unlike the By the Gig plan which can be shared across lines, you pay a flat monthly fee of $45 per line for unlimited data. If you find that you’re not taking advantage of the extra data allowance, you can always use the Xfinity Mobile app to switch your plan to By the Gig.

While this is much cheaper than some unlimited data packages, there are caveats. Streaming is SD, rather than HD on the By the Gig plan. You also don’t get the higher-quality cellular service in times with high network traffic perk, although you can purchase an HD pass to get it. As well as the potential to be slowed at times of network congestion, you get reduced speeds after 20GB of usage per line.

3. Combine the two

Xfinity Mobile Combined Plans

What if you need unlimited data, but the kids don’t? Perhaps it’s more likely to be the other way around when you take gaming and YouTube into consideration. In any event, you can have a combination of Unlimited and By the Gig plans on your account to suit your needs.

It works just the same as you would expect, but unfortunately, there are no savings to be made by combining. You could have one Unlimited plan for one line and then a By the Gig plan for two, three, or four other lines to share. So for an Unlimited Plan at $45 and a 3GB By the Gig plan at $30, your total bill would work out to $75 per month.

All of your plans can be managed through the Xfinity Mobile app, so you can switch it around each month until you find the best combination that works for your household.

4. Tablet and smartwatch plans

Xfinity Mobile Tablets

One benefit of being able to use multiple lines on one plan at no extra cost is that tablets and smartwatches can also be added. Each device counts as one line on the account, and unlimited talk and text are included.

While there’s no extra cost for sharing the data of your plan with other devices, you do need to pay an extra $10 per month to connect each device that isn’t a phone. So you could have a tablet with its own Unlimited plan for $55 per month on your account, or a smartwatch sharing a By the Gigs plan for an extra $10 on top of what you’re already paying.

As with smartphones, you can bring your own device to Xfinity Mobile or you can purchase one from the carrier. While the range of phones is varied, the tablets and smartwatches available in the online shop are limited to Apple devices. If you want the latest iPad Pro or the Apple Watch Series 5 then you’re in luck. Otherwise, you might have to source your device from elsewhere.

That covers all the Xfinity Mobile plans on offer right now. If you want to know what other phone plans are out there, check out our best cell phone plans page.
