Update: August 3, 2020: T-Mobile has now completed closing down the Sprint brand. T-Mobile VP Jon Freier posted on his Twitter account that Sprint stores shut down early on Saturday, August 1, so they could be refurbished into T-Mobile locations on August 2. In addition, visitors to the Sprint’s website are now redirected to T-Mobile’s site.
Original story: July 16, 2020: It’s almost time to say “Goodbye to one of the biggest brand names in the mobile phone industry. Today, T-Mobile confirmed that on August 2, 2020, it will officially unify its operations until the T-Mobile brand name. That means August 2 will see the Sprint brand disappear.
This move was expected to happen sometime this summer, after the nearly two year struggle to merge T-Mobile and Sprint finally happened April 1. T-Mobile has already laid off hundreds of former Sprint employees, and has also disabled Sprint’s 5G network ahead of the August 2 date.
In a press release, T-Mobile stated most of Sprint’s retail store locations will be rebranded as T-Mobile stores. It also hinted at new deals that will be officially announced next week. The Sprint brand removal was buried in an announcement that mostly promoted T-Mobile’s new efforts at combating robocalls and phone scams for its customers.
