  • Scener is expanding its remote movie watching support to Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, and more.
  • The web browser extension is also launching a new mode that will allow as many as 1 million people to watch a movie or TV show at the same time.
  • The company is hosting movie watch parties during [email protected] next week.

Ever since the COVID-19 outbreak began to affect the US in mid-March, most movie theaters closed their doors. This has not only caused streaming services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, and others to become more popular, but it has led to the increased use of services that allow friends and family to stream the same movie together remotely. Today, one of the most popular of these services, Scener, has confirmed it has expanded its support for many more of these services and added new features and events.

Scener is a Chrome web browser extension for Windows PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks. Previously, Scener supported remote viewing of Netflix movies and TV shows, and it later added support for HBO. Now, the service has officially added support for Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Funimation, and Vimeo. Both hosts and viewers must still be subscribed to the same service to view movies. Hulu support is only available for the more expensive no-ads subscription service.

Previously, Scener supported watching movies and shows remotely with up to 10 friends. Now, the service has added another public viewing mode. This allows up to 10 people to host a single stream, with video cameras, and those hosts can invite up to 1 million people to watch a movie or TV show with them.

Adding Scener on Disney Plus and other services isn’t the only thing the company announced today. Because of this huge new public viewing theater mode, Scener has announced it will host a series of movies shows on its service from July 23-25 as part of the new [email protected] streaming convention event. There will be two tracks (movie and anime), and the full schedule can be found at the Scener website.

In addition, Scener will be the host for another online viewing event next week. Rifftrax, the comedy team made up of former writers and performers from Mystery Science Theater 3000, will be offering their live comedy commentary for the first episode of the first season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. The event will begin at 8:30 PM Eastern time on Wednesday, July 22. Again, more details are available at the Scener website.
