  • The Xiaomi Redmi 9 has officially launched in Europe.
  • The new phone packs a powerful chip for the price as well as a big battery.
  • Expect to pay a starting price of ~$170 for the phone.

We’ve seen plenty of Redmi 9 leaks in recent days, with specs and more apparently breaking cover. We were expecting the phone to officially launch later this month, but Xiaomi has silently released the phone in Spain today.

True to the leaks, the Redmi 9 packs a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, which is one of the more capable SoCs for the money right now. The processor offers an octacore CPU (two Cortex-A75 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores) and a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU.

Other core specs include a 6.53-inch FHD+ LCD screen, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage, and a 5,020mAh battery with 18W charging (you get a 10W charger in the box though).

The Redmi 9 also packs a quad rear camera setup, featuring a 13MP main shooter, 8MP ultra-wide camera (118 degree field of view), 5MP macro lens, and 2MP depth sensor. In other words, it’s a pretty flexible setup, but you’ll be relying on digital zoom here. Selfies are handled by an 8MP shooter in a waterdrop notch.

Other noteworthy features include a rear fingerprint scanner, software-based face unlock, NFC, USB-C, and a 3.5mm port. NFC in particular is a welcome addition, as it’s not always guaranteed for cheap phones.

The Redmi 9 starts at €149 (~$170) for the 3GB/32GB model, while the 4GB/64GB variant will set you back €179 (~$204). But the company is offering discounted pricing of €139 (~$158) and €169 (~$192) respectively for three days. Bookings kick off on June 15 at midnight.
