Users waiting for a way to transfer tracks from Google Play Music to YouTube Music finally have an official tool that makes the process quick and painless, Google announced in a blog post.

Google Play Music is reaching the end of its life and will shut down by the end of the year. To help people move their local music files over to YouTube Music, Google is launching a feature in the YouTube Music app that lets users transfer files over with just a few taps.

Users will continue to have access to both services for the time being, and Google promised to provide plenty of notice before it ultimately kills off Google Play Music before the end of the year.

While this tool makes it easier to transfer music between the two services, it’ll be interesting to see how anyone using Google Play Music for a long time will adapt to the YouTube Music service. It’s quite different in terms of layout and feel, and YouTube Music is still lacking many features compared to Google Play Music.

Thankfully, the price remains the same. A YouTube Music and Google Play Music subscription both go for $9.99 a month. However, users can also opt to spend an extra $2 a month to get full access to YouTube Premium with all the features that it includes.

Using the transfer tool

To transfer your music over, you simply need to download the YouTube Music app on your device and click the Transfer button. It sounds like a very painless process, so it should be easy for fans of the retiring Google Play Music to get started with the newer music app. This feature should start rolling out to YouTube Music and Google Play Music users starting today, May 12.

The tool will not only transfer music libraries, but it’ll also move personal taste preferences, albums, playlists, likes and dislikes, uploads, purchases, and curated stations.

The company also announced podcast listeners can head to this page to quickly transfer their subscriptions to Google Podcasts.
