Update, June 24, 2020 (11:39 AM ET): We have some new information regarding a possible release date for the Motorola Edge Lite. Continue on for all the latest!
Original article: This year, Motorola finally returned to the world of premium smartphones with the Motorola Edge Plus. The $1,000 device has all the specs you’d expect from a 2020 flagship. However, we have heard plenty of rumors to suggest that a cheaper variant of the device is on the way, tentatively known as the Motorola Edge Lite.

To be clear, this would be a different phone from the vanilla Motorola Edge, which launched alongside the Edge Plus. That phone has a cheaper price tag but the Edge Lite should go even lower. As one would expect, the Motorola Edge Lite will likely share many design elements as the Edge and Edge Plus, but with some corners cut in the specs department to keep the price down.

Name and release date
According to tipster Ishan Agarwal and Pricebaba, the new device from Motorola in the Edge line could be called the Motorola Edge Lite. The company hasn’t directly confirmed this information, but Agarwal is a fairly reliable leaker and the Lite branding makes perfect sense to us. For now, we’re going with the Edge Lite name.

Later, we learned via GSM Arena that Motorola is planning a launch event for July 7, 2020. While the invitation for the launch doesn’t specifically say anything about a Motorola Edge Lite (or anything else, either), it’s a good bet that the new phone will be the star of the show.
Even if for some strange reason the Motorola Edge Lite doesn’t show up at this July 7 event, its launch can’t be too far off considering all the leaks we’re seeing right now.
Motorola Edge Lite design
The big selling point of the Motorola Edge Plus is the “waterfall display that cascades over the sides to deliver a seemingly borderless experience. Since this is the source of the “Edge branding, we fully expect the Motorola Edge Lite to also have a curved display.
However, Motorola might dial back the curves a bit for the Edge Lite, likely in an effort to keep down costs. It’s also possible the Edge Lite could have a flat screen, although that would seem counter-intuitive. Unfortunately, without any leaked renders, we can’t be entirely sure.
According to details from XDA Developers, the Motorola Edge Lite could have a 6.7-inch display, which is the same size as the Edge and the Edge Plus. However, the display might be a bit more obscured on the Edge Lite due to the rumor that it could have a dual-lens selfie camera in its display cutout. This would make it look quite different from the Edge and Edge Plus, which both have just one selfie camera.
XDA also discovered some potential colorway names: Prussian, Surfing Blue, Azury, and Soft White. It’s not likely they would all happen, though, as Prussian, Azury, and Surfing Blue all very likely reference various blue colors. It’s more likely one of those blues will land with the Soft White colorway, but the jury is still out on that.
Specs and features
An anonymous source speaking with XDA Developers dished out almost all the specs of the Motorola Edge Lite. These specs obviously aren’t confirmed, so take them all with a grain of salt.
According to the source, there will be a lot of spec overlap when it comes to the vanilla Edge and the Motorola Edge Lite. The two phones will likely have the same processor, the same display resolution and aspect ratio, the same amount of RAM, and even the same number of rear cameras.
Rumors suggest there might be a lot of spec overlap between the Edge and the Edge Lite.
What will likely be the chief differentiator between the Edge from the Motorola Edge Lite is availability: although the Edge is already available in various parts of the world, it’s not here in the US yet. The Edge Lite, though, will likely land as a Verizon exclusive in the US, but we’ll touch on that more in the next section.
For now, here are the rumored specs for the Motorola Edge Lite:

Price and availability
So far, we don’t know much about potential pricing for the Motorola Edge Lite. However, we can easily say how much it won’t cost since we can be reasonably assured it will undercut the Motorola Edge (and certainly the Motorola Edge Plus).
With that in mind, the Motorola Edge launched at £549 (~$681) while the Edge Plus starts at $999. Knowing that, we assume the Motorola Edge Lite will land in the sub-$500 range here in the United States, although that’s just us making a guess.

For what it’s worth, a European retail site leaked a price listing for the phone at €398.45 (~$446), so that lines up with our estimate.
The question you might have is this: why would Motorola release and Edge Lite when it shares so many specs with the Edge? The answer to that might simply be the launch areas of the phones. The vanilla Edge is still unavailable in the US while we are relatively certain the Motorola Edge Lite will land as a Verizon exclusive (just like the Edge Plus). Therefore, the vast majority of US consumers might not even know that a Motorola Edge exists.
