Here’s why the $1,399 Surface Duo doesn’t have NFC

  • Microsoft has outlined its reasoning behind the lack of NFC in the Surface Duo.
  • The firm says it chose to focus on ‘fundamental scenarios’ first.

The Microsoft Surface Duo finally has a September 10 shipping date, with the firm listing a $1,399 price tag for the dual-screen foldable device. At this price, you’d expect a stacked spec sheet, and you’d be mistaken for the most part.

One of the biggest omissions has to be NFC, as the wireless standard is used for everything from mobile payments and public transit to device pairing and more. Now, the company has explained the reason behind the lack of NFC.

“Surface Duo does not currently offer NFC. The role of any first-generation design is to focus on fundamental scenarios that solve customer challenges, the company told Windows Central.

“Surface Duo is purpose-built for mobile productivity and giving people new ways to complete complex tasks while away from their computer. With this core priority complete, we will listen to customer feedback and apply that lens to future iterations of the product.

The firm is indeed correct in focusing on the basics for a first-generation product like the Surface Duo, so it’s completely understandable to skip features like wireless charging, water resistance, 5G, and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

However, NFC has become a staple in many mid-range phones around the world, let alone flagship-tier devices that sell for $1,000 or more. So those wanting to tap and pay at the grocery store or use NFC for public transport will need to carry a second device as well.

The Surface Duo also uses last year’s Snapdragon 855 processor and packs a single 11MP camera up front. Those looking for a more traditional high-end mobile experience might want to look elsewhere then. But hopefully Microsoft’s dual-screen software additions and productivity focus can make up for the modest specs.
