The Google Pixel Buds 2 will get updates in the form of “feature drops, similar to the way Pixel smartphones receive updates. That should allow the company to keep the headphones current with new stuff to keep users happy with their relatively expensive earbud purchase.

The Google Pixel Buds 2 cut the cord of the original Pixel Buds and go head-to-head with Apple’s AirPods. You can use them to access Google Assistant just by saying “Hey Google,” with no need to touch the buds at all. At an MSRP of $179, the Pixel Buds 2 are cheaper than AirPods Pro.

In a statement to Forbes, Google confirmed that the regular feature updates would be available for the Pixel Buds 2. However, the company didn’t say what is in the first update, nor did it say when users of the Google Pixel Buds 2 could expect to see the drop.

The company was not clear how frequent these updates will be. However, Google’s representative did say that the updates wouldn’t happen at the same time as those for the Pixel phones, nor would they be quarterly.

As far as Google’s plans, a company representative said, “the goal will be to continue to introduce new helpful features over time, much like we do with Pixel phones.

There’s a little room for improvement in terms of the Google Pixel Buds 2 features. For example, the company could introduce EQ settings to give users more control over the earbuds and the sound they offer. With that said, the Google Pixel Buds 2 are already quite good, with our review calling them “Android’s AirPods. While new features are always lovely, Google already has a solid pair of wireless earbuds on its hands, and new features will only stand to make them better.

For anyone who owns a pair of Google Pixel Buds 2, the idea of significant software updates that improve the experience of listening to them is exciting, and it adds another reason to make them worth considering.
