Confirmed: No more OnePlus McLaren phones

OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition with McLaren logo

Last week, it was reported that OnePlus’ partnership with McLaren might be coming to an end because the phone maker is no longer listed as a 2020 F1 partner on the McLaren website. We’ve now received official word from the British sports car manufacturer, making it clear that its long-standing partnership with OnePlus is now over.

In an emailed statement to Android Authority, a McLaren spokesperson said:

Our partnership with OnePlus, which came to its scheduled conclusion recently, has been a highly successful collaboration between two iconic and innovative brands. Since the start of this partnership in 2018, OnePlus has been a supportive, valued partner and we wish them well and hope to see them in the future.

The last product we saw as a result of the OnePlus-McLaren partnership was the OnePlus Concept One. It had McLaren’s logo stamped on it and the company’s signature Papaya Orange leather finish. McLaren even supplied OnePlus with the electrochromic glass found in high-end cars for the Concept One’s camera.

Though the OnePlus Concept One never saw an official release, we did see McLaren Edition models of the OnePlus 7T Pro and OnePlus 6T that went on sale with souped-up specs and exclusive designs. With the latest confirmation, it’s safe to say that there won’t be any OnePlus 8 McLaren editions this year, or subsequent McLaren-branded OnePlus phones in the future.

The end of OnePlus’ collaboration with McLaren doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be any new special edition OnePlus phones, however. The company previously tied up with Disney for Star Wars and Marvel-themed devices, and we could see it enter more such partnerships in the future.
