  • Photos of the Asus Zenfone 7 appear to have leaked, revealing key details of the device.
  • The flip-up camera will likely make its return.
  • It appears it would also ditch the rear fingerprint reader for an in-screen sensor.

Asus’ August 26 launch event for the Zenfone 7 might not have many mysteries left.

A series of photo leaks on Weibo and elsewhere (h/t Android Police) suggests Asus’ new phone will ultimately be an evolution of the Zenfone 6, including its signature flip-up camera array. True to earlier rumors, there’s even a third camera — you might not be hurting for photographic choices, although it’s not certain what the new addition will bring. A specs leak points to a 64MP main camera as well as 12MP and 8MP companion shooters.

The imagery also shows that the rear fingerprint reader has vanished, hinting at an under-display fingerprint sensor and a switch to a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen.

One of the leaks reportedly shows the box for one model and hints at a powerful but also relatively affordable design. This standard Zenfone 7 version (not the Pro) will likely have a Snapdragon 865 chip, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and 5G support. Past rumors have hinted at 5,000mAh batteries in at least some versions. The 7 might only trail slightly behind all-out devices such as the Galaxy Note 20 series, then, even though it’s likely to cost much less.

It’s still not certain how much the phone will cost, although WinFuture‘s Roland Quandt suggested the Zenfone 7 would remain at its predecessor’s $499 starting price. That price would likely be for the model with 6GB of RAM and bump up to $549 for a version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. If so, the series could represent a bargain compared to flagships costing twice as much.

Availability may be the sticking point. While Asus likes to set prices in US dollars, there’s no guarantee the Zenfone 7 will reach North America or otherwise see the wide distribution you might like. Still, the leaks suggest that Asus believes it has a winning formula on its hands.
